Why Pediatric Eye Care and Eye Exams Matter
Vision is fundamental to a child's growth, influencing how they see the world and learn, engage in physical activities, and interact socially. Good vision goes beyond just seeing clearly; it's about ensuring they have the visual skills necessary for success in and out of the classroom. Pediatric eye care also allows for early detection and treatment of eye conditions, essential for maintaining clear vision and supporting your child's development.
Your Child Needs More Than a Basic Vision Screening
While vision screenings and pediatric eye exams play roles in identifying vision problems, they serve different purposes and offer varying degrees of thoroughness. Vision screenings, typically conducted in schools or pediatrician offices, are quick checks to identify potential visual impairments. However, they are just the first step. Pediatric eye exams provide a more comprehensive evaluation, examining visual acuity, eye function, and health and detecting conditions that could affect visual development.

How Often Should Your Child Get An Eye Exam?
Starting from infancy, the American Optometric Association recommends a first eye exam between 6 and 12 months to catch any early issues that could impact development. Before school, at ages 3 to 5, children should have an exam to identify conditions caused by poor visual skills, like lazy eyes or crossed eyes. Once school begins, we advise annual exams for children six and older to manage and detect any vision problems affecting learning and social skills, ensuring their academic and developmental success.
